The old capital, a sixth-century monastery above the meeting of two rivers, and lunch by the water — an easy half day from Tbilisi.
Start at Jvari Monastery on the ridge, where the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers meet below and visibly refuse to mix. Take a jacket: it is windy up there whatever the forecast says.
Down in Mtskheta you have Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, an eleventh-century building that was the coronation and burial church of Georgian kings. The town itself is small enough to walk in an hour and has good churchkhela.
Most drivers will suggest a riverside restaurant on the way back if you want lunch. Say so when you book and they will plan the timing around it.
